Fig. 25a is a mysterious take on the natural history of the nineteenth century. I grew up on books like James Gurney's "Dinotopia" and Jules Verne's "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea," which derive so much of their richness from pretending to apply a scientific, rationalist eye to their vibrant fantasy worlds.
